The Garlic Fair : History

Lautrec’s Pink Garlic Fair is held every year, on the first Friday of August (Friday is the traditional market day in Lautrec). Originally, the Fair marked the beginning of the Pink Garlic marketing period which, following a few weeks in traditional dryers, was ready to be sorted and then sold.

Created in the 1970s, the highlights of Lautrec’s Pink Garlic Fair were :

• an artistic arrangement competition (works of art made from pink garlic : bulbs, grains, leaves, skin, roots etc.)
• a bunch competition, entered by producers only
• free tasting of the traditional Lautrec pink garlic soup.

Lautrec’s Pink Garlic Fair has evolved since then and new events have been added, like the competition for the best pink garlic tart or the record for the longest bunch.

The record for the longest bunch :

Concept : the longest bunch is made by teams of 7 to 8 producers taking turns at regular intervals.

The team is made up of 7 to 8 persons.

The idea is to reach the greatest possible length in 3 hours.

The amount equivalent to the value of the record bunch is given to a charitable organisation.
